
Instructors
Michael S. Nguyen - Shihan, Rokudan (6th dan) – Head Instructor - Mike began his martial arts training in Judo, Karate, and Vietnamese martial arts in 1976. In 1978 he started training in Shorin Ken Karate-do under John Posenau, Kyoshi, 8th dan. In 1983, at the age of 16, Mike would become the youngest member in the history of the prestigious Dai Nippon Butoku Kai (Greater Japan Martial Virtue Society) international division to receive his Shodan (1st degree black belt). Mike would continue to his training under Kyoshi Posenau’s teacher, Tesshin Sensei Hiroyuki Hamada, Hanshi, 9th dan, and under him receive teachings and rank in the classical Japanese arts of Iaido, Kendo, and Jiu-jitsu. He would go on to head up the Karate program at the College of William & Mary and establish the Karate program at the University of Virginia before opening the Bushin Martial Arts Academy with his brother John. Mike received his instructor’s certification in Gracie Jiu-jitsu in 2008 at the Gracie Jiu-jitsu Academy headquarters in Torrance, Ca. and continues to teach and train to further improve his martial skills daily. Mike is the head instructor at the academy.

John L. Nguyen – Shidoin, Yondan (4th dan) – Head Instructor - John began training in the martial arts under his father and brother’s watchful eyes in 1978 when he was just 4 years old. Following his older sibling’s footsteps, he began training in Shorin Ken Karate-do under Kyoshi John Posenau in 1980. He received his Shodan in 1992 and would go on to train under Sensei Hamada in the arts of Aikido, Judo, and Kobudo, and under Mike Nguyen in Kendo and Iaido. He would help establish and teach the Karate program at Virgina Tech before moving to New York in 1999. He moved back to Virginia in 2007 to open the Academy with his brother Mike. John continues to seek further knowledge and understanding of the martial arts and thus is always exposing himself to as many effective martial disciplines as possible. He received his instructor’s certification in Gracie Jiu-jitsu in 2008 at the Gracie Jiu-jitsu Academy headquarters in Torrance, Ca, is a head instructor at the Bushin Martial Arts Academy, and teaches most of the classes personally.
Paul D. Day – Yondan (4th dan) – Assistant Instructor - Paul began training in Shorin Ken Karate-do in the early 1980’s under Kyoshi John Posenau. He would go on to train under Sensei Hamada in the arts of Aikido, Judo, and Kobudo. Paul would further his training after moving to New York in 1999, exposing himself to Tai Chi Chuan, Capoeira, Boxing, and Kickboxing. He moved back to Williamsburg in 2008 and began his training in Gracie Jiu-jitsu under John and Mike Nguyen at that time. Paul is a certified personal trainer and assistant Karate instructor at the academy.
Suzanne M. Nguyen – Sandan (3rd dan) – Assistant Instructor - Suzanne began her training in Shorin Ken Karate-do in 1995 under Shihan Chris Gusack at the college of William & Mary. She continued her training in Karate and Iaido under Mike Nguyen at the University of Virginia and studied the arts of Judo and Japanese jiu-jitsu under Sensei Hamada at Old Dominion University. Suzanne began her training Gracie Jiu-jitsu under John and Mike Nguyen in 2008 and is an assistant Karate instructor at the academy.
