Bushin Kan Dojo of Williamsburg is a proud member of Dai Nippon Butoku Kai (Greater Japan Martial Virtue Society). DNBK is one of the largest, longest standing martial arts organizations in the modern world. The organization was established by the elite leaders of the martial arts community and endorsed and backed by his highness the Meiji emperor in 1895 in order to unite, standardize, and promote all of the existing martial arts disciplines that were in existence at that time. DNBK consequentially became the major center for martial arts learning, training, research, and enlightenment. BKD of Williamsburg falls under the direct tutelage and guidance of Tesshin Sensei Hiroyuki Hamada, Hanshi, 9th Dan, Soke-Shorin-Ken Karate Do. Sensei Hamada is a Vice President of the board of directors for DNBK and is the director of DNBK international division. He established DNBK international division Honbu dojo in Va Beach, Va and created the first branch at the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va in 1972. Sensei Hamada holds Hanshi titles in 6 major martial arts disciplines and is the head of Bushin Kan Dojo.

Muso Chishin Ryu Heiho Shorin-Ken Karate do incorporates aspects of the classical Japanese martial arts forms from Judo (the gentle way), Aikido (the way of Harmony), Kobudo (Okinawan weapons training) and Karatedo (the way of the Empty Hand). Karate as a formalized system of fighting evolved many centuries ago from the blending of Okinawan Te and Chinese Kenpo. The practitioners and early masters of these arts continued to add techniques, stances, kata (forms), heiho (strategy), and philosophies to these arts as they were needed. These changes came through needs such as warfare, changes in climates and geography, the various “weapons bans” in Okinawa and Japan, and the need to train in secrecy. These refinements would meld with the ancient fighting systems of the past and would eventually be refined and categorized into the many modern systems of self defense that we have today. Shorin-Ken Karate do combines the most effective and proven techniques, teachings, and philosophies of these traditional disciplines into a single comprehensive, well-rounded, and dynamic form of self defense.

The physical benefits of classical martial arts training are obvious: Proper training will lead to improved strength and muscle development, hardening of the body, improved cardiovascular condition, increased focus and awareness, and of course, the development of one’s ability to adequately defend themselves and their loved ones should the need ever arise. However, the less tangible, but much more important benefits from this type of training can be found in the higher development of the spirit, mind, attitude, and outlook. Through the use of traditional training and teaching methods that have been handed down through the centuries, we focus on building and developing a complete, well rounded martial artist as opposed to concentrating purely on physical development.

Mastery of any system of self defense will take many years of hard work, hard training, mental & spiritual cultivation, perseverance, and major character development. At Bushin Kan Dojo of Williamsburg, we strive to help students advance in all of these aspects of classical martial arts training while maintaining the purity and fidelity of these martial systems as they have been passed down to us through the years.

Whether you are an experienced martial artist who is looking to expand your knowledge base, are a casual practitioner who wishes to stay active and in shape, or are a complete beginner with no prior martial arts training, we can help you to achieve your goals. If you feel that you possess the will, dedication, and perseverance needed to raise your body, your mind, and your spirit to the next level through martial training, then we would love to hear from you.
